Football: Sharjah end two-decade wait for UAE league title

Sharjah are celebrating their first Arabian Gulf League (AGL) title victory in 23 years.

They are guaranteed the trophy after beating Al Wahda 3-2 at the Khalid Bin Mohammad Stadium on Wednesday in their penultimate game of the season.

Igor Coronado opened the scoring for Sharjah in the 30th minute before Leonardo de Souza (40') levelled for Al Wahda.

The hosts doubled their advantage after the break with goals from Welliton Morais (46') and Coronado (57'), while Sebastian Tagliabue scored a brilliant header in the 76th minute for the Abu Dhabi side.

Sharjah last won the domestic championship way back in the 1995-1996 season.

In other games, second-placed Shabab Al Ahli defeated Baniyas 4-1, defending champions Al Ain thrashed Al Wasl 5-1 to move up to third, while Al Jazira were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Dhafra.
