UFC world lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from the sport, after retaining his lightweight title at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi.

He extended his perfect professional record after defeating interim champion Justin Gaethje with a second-round triangle choke submission, claiming his 29th victory.

It was his first fight since the death of his father, coach and mentor Abdulmanap, who died in July following complications arising from COVID-19.

The emotional champion said he had honoured the memory of his father,  and asked his team-mates to cut his gloves off before quitting.
