Unlicensed drivers have been involved in nearly 600 accidents in Ras Al Khaimah since the start of 2018.

The figures have been revealed by RAK Police who have launched a new campaign to highlight the dangers of driving illegally.

They are also stepping up inspections to spot underage drivers, while parents are being urged to monitor their children and not to let them borrow cars before getting a driving licence.

A total of 490 accidents were caused by unlicensed motorists during 2018, while 90 crashes were recorded in the first three months of 2019.

Under the UAE's federal traffic law, those caught driving without a licence can face up to three months in jail and/or a fine of up to AED 5,000.
