US Vice President JD Vance fumbled the biggest award in college football by breaking the trophy in half during Ohio State's visit to the White House, on live TV.

Vance was on stage with the team celebrating their national championship win when the clumsy politician attempted to lift the award, resulting in the prize breaking in two.

The lower portion dropped to the ground, compounding Vance's embarrassment as he scrambled to retrieve it.

To his relief TreVeyon Henderson managed to catch the upper half of the award, showing why he's a leading NFL Draft prospect.

US President Trump also looked on uncomfortably as the horror moment was captured live on TV.

Players managed to re-attach the trophy to its base after red-faced Vance had gathered it from the floor.

Posting on X, Vance saw the funny side of the incident, saying: "I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it."

Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 34-23 to clinch their first national championship win since 2014.
