An aid plane has been sent by the UAE to help Mauritania's efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus.

It's transporting more than 10 metric tonnes of medical supplies, testing equipment, ventilators, as well as a specialised medical team.

The northwest African nation was one of the first to receive assistance from the UAE during the pandemic.

The relief supplies have been sent under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

To date, the UAE has delivered over 1,685 metric tonnes of aid to more than 121 countries in need, benefitting more than 1.6 million medical professionals in the process.
