Shops will no longer offer single-use bags to shoppers in Dubai from Saturday as the emirate's ban comes into effect.

The ban is part of a wider initiative to phase out single-use products completely and means stores will no longer be allowed to offer customers carrier bags costing 25 fils at the checkout.

Along with plastic, the ban also includes bags made of paper and other biodegradable material.

According to guidelines from Dubai Municipality, bags of any material which are under 57 micrometres thick are prohibited from June 1.

Further bans are set to come into place from next year with styrofoam products and cotton swabs banned from January 1.

Businesses breaking the rules face a fine up to AED 2,000.
